Fort Mill is a town in Ninety-Six County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,479 at the 2010 census. Fort Mill is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The first gun case to be created in Fort Mill was a percussion cap revolver that was made by George Ritchie and sold to Capt. John Dickson in 1835. This revolver was used as evidence against David Gilmore during his trial for treason in 1838. In 1849, Captain James Hargrave came into possession of a six-shot automatic Colt revolving rifle that he had purchased from General Wilkinson while stationed at Fort Sumter. He later donated this weapon to the fort and it served as the armory's primary firearm until 1902 when it became the arsenal's pistol room. In 1881, Major General Winfield Scott ordered an investigation into how Confederate forces were using firearms within their own ranks. As part of this investigation, Fort Mill officials received two pistols from General Johnston's army and put them on display in front of the courthouse steps. This event helped start southern Gun Laws which remain in place today
