Fort Mill is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Fort Mill was founded by Confederate General John Buford in 1864 and named for him after his victory at Chickamauga Creek. In 1865, Fort Mill was burned during the American Civil War. Fort Mill began as a log fortification on the edge of town on land that had been purchased from Indian Chief Robeson by GeneralJohn Buford in 1864. The fortifications were manned by Confederate soldiers until February 9, 1865 when they were surrendered to Union forces under Captain Samuel Wofford. The post office which opened in 1865 was called "Buford's Forks" and served until1875; it then became "Fort Mills". The first postmaster was Mrs. Elizabeth Aiken before she moved to Greenville and Mrs. Jno Pritchett took over from her in 1876 In 1870, there were only 10 residents living in Fort Mill while the population had grown to over 100 by 1880 The first school opened in Fort Mill on December 12, 1870 with three students attending In 1872 a sawmill and gristmill were built along with several other businesses including a grocery store A cotton gin followed in 1873 and two more stores also opened around this time In 1886 four homes were built north of town on what is now known as Lonoke Road (later renamed Spartanburg Boulevard) At this time there were about 150 residents living within Fort Mill limits

TheBrowning Automatic Rifle was adopted by American forces during World War I and became widely used throughout Europe and Asia. It soon became apparent that this type of firearm could not only shoot continuously but also handle recoil better than older muzzle loading firearms. After World War I ended, Automatic Firearms Manufacturing Company introduced another new model – the .30 caliber Winchester Model 1903 rifle – which utilized a gas-operated action similar to those used in automatic pistols from earlier eras. This handgun quickly replaced all other types of rifles chambered for .30 caliber ammunition in military service!

Fort Mill was founded by Colonel John Cushing and his family in 1775 as a military post on the Santee River. In 1805, it became a part of the Cherokee Nation and in 1827 it became part of South Carolina. The town was abandoned after the American Civil War and most of its buildings were destroyed by fire. The town site is located on the south side of Santee River near present day Columbia, SC. It is thought that the fort may have been built to protect settlers from Indian attacks during this time period. After American independence was granted to South Carolina in 1781, Colonel John Cushing decided to make Fort Mill his new home and began construction on what would become one of South Carolina's first commercial towns. When Fort Mill was completed in 1785, it served as an important military base for white settlers as well as Cherokee Indians who lived around nearby Mount Pleasant (now known asColumbia). In 1805 or 1806, when Charleston became an independent city under British jurisdiction following the signing of peace treaties with Native Americansveterans from Ft Sumter fought in what is now called Bull Run Campaign against British forces led by General Robert Ewell Jr.. Aftermath of Battle at Bull Run left many soldiers dead or wounded including Colonel John Cushing himself who lost an arm due torapnel injury sustained while leading cavalry charges against Confederate lines Following Confederate victory over Union forces at Gettysburg in July 1862 Little Rock finally fell within Confederate hands giving Fort Millrovolutionary opportunities for whites living around Columbia to leave for new homes outside rebel controlled areas On October 3rd 1865 Union troops burned down much of FortMill burning every building inside except for some fifty-six cannons which still stand today
Fort Mill was an important military post in the early history of South Carolina. It was first established in 1777, and played a significant role in the colony's defense against British invaders. The fort served as a Headquarters for the 1st South Carolina Regiment during the Revolutionary War, and also served as a training ground for future Confederate soldiers.
