The town was founded by English settlers in 1795 and named for Fort Moultrie on Roanoke Island. The first post office in Fort Mill was established on January 12, 1800, under the name of Graftonville. A post office called Smithsville was also established in 1802 but it failed to remain open for more than a year. In 1805, a post office called Westville was established and remained open until 1820. In 1827, John Pope became the first Indian trader to ever set foot in what is now Spartanburg County when he landed at Fort Moultrie on Roanoke Island with his family. He built a trading house here and continued to trade goods with Indians until 1830 when he moved his business ashore and started an agricultural enterprise that would last for over 60 years. In 1860, Confederate General Pemberton made his way upriver from Fayetteville through Spartanburg County to Arnolds Landing where he met with Major General Robert Ewell at Coweta Ford before setting off northward along the Hiwassee River towards Petersburg Junction escorted by about 100 cavalrymen under Colonel Amos Dallesandro and Captain John Haysford. On July 15th they reached Chancellor's Bridge where they were surprised by Union forces commanded by Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith who ordered them back across Chancellor's Bridge without battle but allowed Ewell's army to continue moving eastward towards Petersburg Junction where it finally encountered Union forces under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer near Horseshoe Bend on August 16th after driving markers forward several days previous as part of an attempt to mislead Confederate commanders into believing that their opponents had withdrawn from the battle plans altogether). Aftermath: After reaching ground level within Confederate lines - well within Union artillery range - Private First Class Charles Wofford of Company I (US Cavalry), reacted quickly realizing that this could be fatal if not stopped; diving onto cover behind some trees Wofford managed to brandish his revolver and order Custer back across Chancellor’s Bridge without further incident

Fort Mill is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Mill was founded in 1776 by General Edward Braddock and Colonel James Mooney as a supply depot for British forces besieging Charleston. In 1820, it became an incorporated town. The first settler in Fort Mill was John Brown who arrived in 1776 from England with his family and began to cultivate some land near the fortifications. A few years later, he erected a cabin on what is now Main Street. Soon after, others began to arrive and build homes around the fortifications; these were called "Old Fort." The first school in Fort Mill was built in 1779 by Doctor Benjamin Banneker and taught reading, writing, arithmetic and geometry to children of military service stationed there. In 1800–1801 Reverend Drury established Presbyterian services here while also founding Odd Fellows Lodge #2 (now known as Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity). By 1807-08 almost every inhabitant of Fort Mill had joined one of two local militias which patrolled the area on horseback; this system served as early warning systems for attacks on the town by hostile Native Americans or pirates. In 1822-23 General Alexander Maclellan's army invaded South Carolina during his campaign against American President James Ketchum and destroyed much of Charleston including Fort Hill where Ft Mills Post stood until it burned down in 1865 during Union efforts to capture that city from Confederate forces under Robert E Lee

In 1865, Fort Mill was purchased by Confederate General Robert Ewell and converted into a stockade to protect his army against Union forces advancing through South Carolina during the Civil War. Afterward, Fort Mill continued to be used as a military garrison until 1971 when it was decommissioned and sold off to developers. Today,Fort Mill is home to several small businesses and is also popular with tourists for its architecture, historical significance, and hiking trails.
