In 1865, when Union troops moved into south central SC to capture Columbia due to its strategic location between Charleston and Savannah on Mobile Bay, they encountered resistance led by Captain Samuel Fowlkes of FortMill who had commandeered several boats loaded with supplies from local merchants and boatmen attempting to flee before being forced back upstream against their will by Unionist reinforcements commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Pemberton. Aftermath included capturing over 100 men including Fowlkes who later died from his injuries at an unknown location near Columbia after surrendering himself without any fight or resistance; some considered him fortunate enough to die this way rather than be captured alive like most others who surrendered.[1][2]
