The history of gun lights in Fort Mill, South Carolina begins with the first such devices used in the area in 1845. At that time, the fort was located on a peninsula which served as a major trading post between Savannah and Charleston. By 1925, all permanent lights had been installed inside of the fort thanks to advances in technology including electricity and lightbulbs. Fort Mill, South Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 1,803 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Buncombe County. Fort Mill was founded by American Revolutionary War veteran and philanthropist James Wilkinson in 1777 as a military post on the western frontier of what is now North Carolina. The post served as a center for trade with Indian tribes and as a key strategic location for British forces during the early years of the Revolution. After Wilkinson's death in 1778, his son William took over management of Fort Mill and changed its name to Wilmington in his honor. In 1814, Wilmington lost its status as an independent city when it became part of Raleigh; however, it continued to be known as Wilmington until 1978. Wilmington was frequently raided by Native Americans during the early 19th century; therefore, it developed an effective military garrison that protected both its citizens and its goods from raiders. In 1819,Wilmington ceded control of Fort Mill to Raleigh after being forced out of position by Confederate forces invading North Carolina from South Carolina; however, Raleigh never fully relinquished control over Fort Mill until 1984 when it merged into Buncombe County under one government model for all county townships within Buncombe County. The first permanent settler in what is now Fort Mill was James Wilkinson who arrived there in 1777 with six other men from Virginia under General George Washington's command during the retreat from Saratoga Army campaign
