The first chokes on the American continent were created by Europeans in the late seventeenth century. Choke guns, also known as pistols, hadarrows that could be used to pierce the skin of a victim and stop their breathing. This type of weapon was primarily used by Spaniards in America and was not very popular with Native Americans. The English soon got hold of this new technology and began to use it against the natives. In 1692, Captain John Smith discovered an Indian village while on his survey of North Carolina. He killed all the Indians in the village with his choke gun before returning home. This discovery led to much innovation in choke weapons and made them more popular among European settlers. By 1701, chokeguns were being used extensively throughout British America. Choke guns became quite effective at stopping human beings from communicating with each other or attacking enemy forces.

Fort Mill is a small town inleton, South Carolina. The population was 5,486 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Inleton County. Fort Mill is located on the eastern border of Inleton County and had a land area of 3 square miles (8 km²). The first settler in what is now Fort Mill was James Blythe who went to live there in 1824. He and his wife were the parents of Daniel Blythe who founded Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1829. The original post office for Fort Mill was established in 1830 and operated until 1836 when it was moved to Spartanburg. The present courthouse for Inleton County was built in 1904. The townspeople made their first crops at nearby Sparta which they then sold to local farmers for flour and other goods needed by the soldiers stationed in nearby Columbia during the American Civil War. After briefly returning home during that time, General Robert Ewell decided to stay put and fortify his new forces at Corinth instead of returning home just as Confederate forces began arriving from North Carolina to invade South Carolina on April 12, 1865. As more Confederate troops arrived they began moving into what would become Fort Mill but soon realized that they didn't have enough food or ammunition to hold out against an overwhelming Union army led by Ulysses S Grant which invaded on April 15th 1865. With little choice but surrendering all their property including Fort Mill,Fort Pickens and most importantly their people,FortMill became one of the largest slave-owning counties in America with over 60% of its residents being slavesholding white men by 1860 according to historian David Kennedy's book "Inline: History Illustrated."

After the war, the fort reverted back to US control and served as an arsenal until it closed in 1865.
