In 1712–13, American Lieutenant Colonel John Anderson built and occupied a forts at Richland Creek and Ferry Landing on the lower Saluda River. He named these for General James Wilkinson and Major Arthur Stedman respectively. LtCol Anderson's fortifications were replaced by those of British Major-General Peterur Gage in 1717 when he evacuated Charleston during the English Revolution. In 1734, Francis Marion made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Ashley River into South Carolina from Georgia via Fort Mill Bayou while commandant of Sullivan's Expedition against Cherokee Indians under Chief Powhatan; he may have been trying to enter South Carolina through this fortification which was garrisoned by Loyalists supporting Marion's forces at that time. In 1735, when George Rogers Clark invaded North Carolina from within South Carolina along thereditaries' route around present day Spartanburg County his force encountered hostile Native Americans (the Catawba) near Fort Hill about three miles northeast of present day Fort Milltown off US Highway 21A (now I-95). Confederate Brigadier General Robert Ewell decided not to pursue Clark's retreating forces but instead march northwestward towards Augusta where he would attack Union forces marching north from Elizabeth City en route to Wilmington; this decision denied Union forces access to reinforcements necessary for their counterattack against Confederate Army Major General Andrew Lee's withdrawing army advancing through Morehead County toward Richmond Heights; aftermath Clark's Raid became an iconic event in American history leading up to the War of 1812 In 1814 British troops moved into Columbia County after occupying South Carolina during their Invasion of America; they established a military post at Fayetteville with stores and barracks for 1,500 soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Archibald McClellan who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs during their occupation Later that year Presbyterian minister Reverend Stephen Jones founded Taylor’s Missionary Church (later First Baptist Church) on current day Cemetery Road east of town Limits just south of what is now Old Stage Coach Station complex which served as both church and school until 1924 . Reverend Jones also began construction on what is today Second Baptist Church Complex (later Episcopal Cathedral), located adjacent to Cemetery Road between 1840s Hardee Store/Refinery lotEAST OF PRESENT DAY FORT MILL TOWN limits Reverend Jones died there aged 82 years before his death request was granted for building permit A burial ground has been dedicated thereto since 1893 . In 1829 Drury erected a small log courthouse northeast corner courthouse square east side carrying date back one month prior , later renamed Pritchett Courthouse following purchase by trustees Elijah Pritchett & Jno Childers establishing village boundaries After Revd Jones death November 5th 1830 commissioners organized&ordered erectionof new courthouse pro tempore w/o getting council approval thenceforth called Pritchett Courthouse [and still standing ].
