In 1814, it was selected as the site for what would become South Carolina’s first capital city. It remained that way until 1835 when both Charleston and Augusta were designated as state capitals. In 1836, Fort Mill was abandoned due to problems with malaria and other diseases that plagued soldiers stationed there. It remained unoccupied until 1862 when Confederate forces occupied it during their campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. The fort again saw action in 1865 during General Robert E Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. After Reconstruction ended in 1870, Fort Mill reverted back to its original role as a trading post before being abandoned again in 1895-96 due to rising costs of maintenance and limited access to funds from government coffers. The fort reopened in 2000 after undergoing renovation costing $21 million dollars which included reconstruction of all six story walls along with new roofs and decks above the water line - making it one of only two historic sites in South Carolina still accessible for visitor visitation purposes today (the other being Beaufort). Today,Fort Mill offers visitors beautiful views of Savannah River below while providing insight into early American history through its architecture which is also significant for its innovation such as using logs instead of wood clapboards for flooring throughout much of its operations; this helped make South Carolina one of the first states to establishurbanism which continues today around world cities including New York City., Melbourne Australia., Houston TX., Jakarta Indonesia., etc
