Fort Mill was the original location of South Carolina's capital, and it played an important role in statehood. The fortifications at Fort Mill were built during the time of Charleston's first successful siege of Fort Moultrie in 1776, and they remained in use until 1814. The fortification also served as a military post during the American Revolution and during the Reconstruction period. After its closure in 1834, Fort Mill fell into disuse and was eventually abandoned. However, it has been returned to use as a historical site by the South Carolina Historical Development Authority. The first permanent settlers in what is now South Carolina arrived in 1775 from England after their ship HMS Dolphin ran aground on Tryon Island off North Carolina coast. They named their new home "Cumberland" after Prince Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, who had led them there. In 1776, Charleston successfully besieged for two weeks the forts at Moultrie on Hilton Head Island (now part of Beaufort County), which then became the new capitol of South Carolina. The forts at Moultrie were manned by about 50 soldiers each, but they failed to repel Charleston's attacks on them. During this siege, local Native Americans helped lead by example and demonstrated their willingness to fight alongside European troops against English oppression. As a result of these events, King George III issued a proclamation calling for all British subjects living within Georgia or Florida to rise up against British rule and join forces with him against Great Britain. As soon as news reached England that General James Orange had captured Savannah on February 15th – just four days after Savannah had become the second city in America – King George III ordered his commanders throughout North America to mount an immediate assault upon British soil should Orange be successful at capturing Richmond (now Charlottesville). On March 3rd General James Orange succeeded in capturing Savannah; this event set off a chain reaction that resulted in over 2 million Brits becoming Americans over the next few years... This success put an end to any remaining British resistance inside America... South Carolina became one of thirteen colonies when Virginia seceded from Great Britain on April 12th 1388 following pressure from Parliamentarians across Europe... At this point Sir Peter Sprigg decided that instead of another roundabout process through New York City where Dublin would vote first then Philadelphia would ratify it – he recommended that South Carolinians unite with other Patriots throughout America under one banner so we could confront Great Britain head-on rather than having our grievances passed onto future generations like Virginia did… sprigg believed that if we all united together we could stand up to anyone no matter how big or strong they might be… sprigg knew that if we banded together we could hold our own against any force available while still obeying our Queen’s orders not just domestically but also abroad [emphasis added]. In December 1781 Governor John Rutledge convened a General Assembly consisting of delegates from all thirteen colonies which voted unanimously to establish what is today known as South Carolina as an independent republic with its own government and laws….ratified by Congress on January 10th 1782… One year later (May 8th) seventy more rebels surrendered at Sullivan’s Island […] This event started what is known as “The Sullivan Rebellion” because Nathan Hale who led forces opposing Cornwallis was found guilty thereof
Fort Mill was founded in 1795 by Captain James Wilkinson. The first fortification on the site was a small cannon battery, built in 1796. In 1814, Fort Mill became the capital of South Carolina.
