The Fort Mill Armory, also known as the Armory Annex, was a former armory and munitions storage facility located in Fort Mill, South Carolina. It was built in 1907 by the United States Army and arsenal. The armory served as a main ammunition depot for the Union army during the American Civil War. The annex also housed artillery batteries, stores and barracks for soldiers stationed in Fort Mill. In 1945, it was sold to the town of Fort Mill and became part of the municipal building complex. It was closed in 1984 and demolished.

Fort Mill was a small garrison town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina from 1775 to 1865. The original fort was built by General Nathanael Greene and named Fort Augusta after his daughter Augusta. When the American Revolution began, the fort became an important post for defense of the county. In 1775, when Fort Augusta was reoccupied by the British, General Nathanael Greene ordered construction of a new fort at Fort Mill. The new fort was called Fort Moultrie after Governor Moultrie of South Carolina. The first commander of Fort Mill was Colonel John Marshall. The fort served as an important base for operations during the American Revolution and later played an important role in Reconstruction in South Carolina. After the Civil War, Fort Mill reverted to Confederate control and it remained under Confederate rule until 1917 when it was surrendered by Union forces. The town ofFort Mill developed around the military installation and civilian community which developed around it. The first stores were established in 1775; however, there are no records that show how much merchandise or food was sold here until after 1815 when a store opened on Post Road known as "The Old Dutch Store." This store continued to be open until 1827 when it burned down due to fire damage done by Major General Ayer's brigade while they were besieging Yorktown Peninsula.. In addition to its grocery store, "The Old Dutch Store" also offered sawmills and other mills which produced flour for local consumption as well as munitions needed during the Revolutionary War period. In 1798-99 another store opened at what is now Main Street near where Highway 278 crosses over from Spartanburg County into Graham County; this store operated for about two years before being closed due to financial difficulties caused byetta hard times with farming in general becoming less profitable than manufacturing throughout much of rural America at that time.. After 1800 many families moved out of town because of economic reasons such as improved transportation options available outside Spartanburg County or changes occurring within Charleston including increased competition from North Carolina textile mills operating out of nearby Greenville and Wilmington along with increasing prices for goods brought into Charleston via sailboat or river voyage.. A few families did remain though but increasingly found themselves surrounded by machines coming onto the scene whether that be steamboats carrying produce upriver (such as peas) or cotton ginners bringing raw cotton ashore.. This development led eventually to a lack of demand among farmers who could not keep up with rising prices so much so that some abandoned their land altogether completely while others simply stopped cultivating entirely giving rise to what is now known as "the ghost towns" problem .. Despite this general trend away from production/marketing activities associated with early nineteenth century antebellum Spartanburg County we do have evidence indicating that certain businesses did still operate including one hotel which opened in 1825 on Meeting Street between Highways 278 & 280 just south of present day Main Street (later renamed Broadwalk). This hotel continued operation until 1862 when it burned down due to arson . In addition there are several churches located within walking distance including Methodism Episcopal Church on Meeting Street east between Highways 278 & 280 (which still operates), Presbyterian Churches on Cowpens Avenue northwest corner between Highways 278 & 280 (which closed in 1898), Baptist Churches on Park Drive northwest corner betweenHighways 278 & 280 (closed 1895), Roman Catholic Church #1 on Gadsden Boulevard southeast corner between Highways 279 & 283 (closed 1916), Methodist Episcopal Church #2 southwest corner intersectionHighway 279 & 283 (closed 1955). Additionally majority African Americans lived here prior to emancipation although they continued working off-farm jobs through 1880s most notably picking apples off farmssteads beginning opposite current day Elizabethtown Mall .
