Florence is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Clemson to the north, Greenville to the east, and Beaufort County to the south. Florence has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with average monthly temperatures ranging from 21.7 °C (70.0 °F) in January to 25.4 °C (77.6 °F) in May. The highest temperature ever recorded was 38.2 °C (100.0 °F). Florence's natural resources include timber and coal reserves which date back to the 1870s when settlers started arriving in what is now Florence County by way of Cherokee Trail and Indianola Road. The community of Florence was founded on December 3, 1838, by nine men who set out from Jacksonville, Florida for what is today known as South Carolina on horseback under the leadership of Captain John Sibley and his brother-in-law Moses Williams Sr.. After traveling for 444 miles they arrived at Fort Jackson on February 15th of that year having covered an altitude of 1,500 feet (390 meters). At this location they erected a small cabin and named it "Fort Jackson." They also built a stockade around their new village which served as their home until 1839 when they moved into larger dwellings built by Major James Pemberton near present day Florence High School property… In 1840 Captain Sibley hired Henry Griggs from Charlotte as his clerk and interpreter; Griggs later became president of Clemson University It was during this time that early settlers began referring to "Florence" as "Jasper Hill," after Jasper Hill House on North Main Street where Majors Pemberton, John Aiken and others met while exploring some coal deposits lying adjacent to Fort Jackson... By 1845 there were over 100 white residents living in Jasper Hill Village including Captains Sibley, Williams and Isaac Neely... By 1850 about 150 white residents had settled within two miles radius of Jasper Hill Village… Among these pioneer citizens were: Daniel Boone Wills family headquaters; Drury Store operated by Granville Burlingame; Elisha Denny & Sons bakery; Rev Jno Hogg running school for young children; Mrs Brooks ferrying passengers across Indefinite River between Jasper Hill Village & Beaufort County In 1851 General Robert Ewell took possession of FortJackson after its capture from Confederate forces under Jubal Early A few months later General Johnston ordered all Union troops withdrawn from Charleston due to heavy losses suffered at Battle Of Stones River As part of Johnston's order all stores within five miles radius must be closed including Drury Store which continued operations until 1865 On November 10th 1865 General Beauregard made an appearance before Congress at Philadelphia attended by Gen Wade Hampton who introduced him saying "General Beauregard came down here last night...he looked very tired but he seemed quite well". This marked the end not only for Drury store but also for many other businesses throughout Charleston because Sherman's army burned any remaining buildings not used for military purposes during his march through town June 12-15 1865

Florence, South Carolina, is a city located in the southeastern corner of the state of South Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1819 and named for Florence, Italy. The population of Florence was 11,813 at the 2010 census. The history of Florence began with a group of white men who set out from Columbia, South Carolina to find new land in 1819. They arrived on what is now called King's Highway and established a trading post. From this location they developed trade with other areas in the Southeast and sold goods from their store to travelers passing through their territory. In 1830, African Americans were brought over as slaves and were considered property of the local white landowners. This caused some tension among both groups until Reconstruction ended in 1865 when Union troops took control of South Carolina. During this time many black people lost their jobs and homes due to economic decline. However, many black residents continue to reside in Florence today thanks to its diversity and growing economy. Florence has experienced various political changes throughout its history including slaveownership (1830-1865), Reconstruction (1865- present), complete Black supremacy (1965-2000), apartheid (1970s-1990s), civil rights movement activism (1960s-1980s), deregulation/liberalization during the 1990s which led to job losses for textile workers, recession during 2007-2009 which impacted Florence negatively but also attracted investment into downtown businesses such as restaurants and shops district; current Mayor Anealynn James' term began on January 1st 2013

The town of Florence, South Carolina was founded on December 12, 1821 by Col. John H. Smith and the town's first settler, Abraham Lincoln, when they decided to move from Hilton Head Island to what is now Florence after the failure of their earlier attempt to establish a settlement in the area. The town was named for PrincessFlorence of Naples who died in December 1824 while visiting the area. In March 1861, during the American Civil War, Florence became one of eight Confederate States of America towns that seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy. After secession, Florence saw heavy fighting andbombing raids as part of Confederate efforts to re-establish control over much of southern SC. On April 9th 1865, Union forces arrived at Florence with orders to burn down all buildings within the city limits because Confederate General Robert E. Lee had made an agreement with President Andrew Johnson that any remaining Confederates would be pardoned if they surrendered unconditionally. However, many residents chose to stay behind and fight until surrender or death; most notably Lt. Colonel James Denton (later executed for treason) who fought until he was captured by Union troops near Florence on October 15th 1865. In 1998 Hurricane Floyd struck southeastern SC causing extensive damage including partial demolition of several downtown businesses along with loss of life; however, no injuries were reported in Florence.
