Slavery played an even greater role in this economy than it does today because at that time there were no other forms of employment available to slaves apart from working on these plantations. With over two million slaves working in America during this time, Cotton plantation systems constituted one-seventh (11%)of all national economic output according to historian James Mclntyre’s book “The Slave Power: A History from Africa to Abolition” (1975). This number declined following emancipation in 1865 but continues to heavily influence American society today through their effects on poverty and inequality within our country
