Florence, South Carolina is a town located in Charleston County, South Carolina. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. Florence is the county seat of Charleston County. The first European settlers in what is now Florence were Scots-Irish Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1786. They built a log cabin on land that now stands near the intersection of Park and Mill streets. The mission was called Mount Zion, after the mountain where Jesus Christ preached His sermon known as John 3:16–17. In 1805, a group of white men from North Carolina founded Fort Sumter while they were still living in Ireland and brought with them their Scottish Presbyterian missionaries to help found this new colony. The original name for Fort Sumter was King's Island but it changed to Fort Moultrie in honor of Captain James Moultrie, one of the founders of Charlotte and its first mayor (1802). In 1810, General David Dixon moved his army from Norfolk to Charleston to repel an attack by Natchez Indians led by Chief Pontotoc (or Pottawatomie) and his brother Ocotaliks on British forces at Camden Yards under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Pelham’s command. On July 15th General Dixon ordered Major Robert Ewell to move his battery across Broad Street bridge over Hilton Head River into Fort Moultrie grounds firing rifle shots into the night whilecolored light show played down below; this event became known as “the Gunpowder Incident." After three days' bombardment no Indian resistance could be found so LtCol Pelham decided not to pursue further and returned home without achieving any military objectives other than embarrassing General Daniel Boone who had been sent with orders only to prevent Indian engagement). However public opinion quickly shifted against Pelham after this incident which continues today with some residents calling him " Gentleman Major" because he did not engage in combat. In 1814 Aiken County was created from part of York County when York split off from South Carolina due to disagreements about boundary lines between these two states during Reconstruction following the Civil War. This allowed for more slave trade traffic through town limits which increased commerce and development opportunities for African Americans moving northward during this time period; howeverrestrictions on free black migration continued until 1840 when all slaves within five miles of any white person were required to leave town according Furthermore Free Negroes were barred from holding property or voting until 1865 when they received full citizenship rights under Reconstruction laws governing America's newly freed slaves In 1860 Unionist sympathizers attacked Confederates drilling for coal near Florence while Confederate soldiers nearby unloading munitions onto boats used by both sides resulted in skirmishes that grew more serious when troops loyal to McClellan retreated upstream leaving behind munitions unloaded on friendly vessels including one belonging to President Abraham Lincoln that came within cannon range ending up hitting a schooner anchored outside Shoals Harbor killing four people including its captain Samuel Fenton shipsmaster) resulting in heavy losses for Confederate forces who lost over sixty killed plus many wounded making it one of history’s bloodiest engagements .
