Since its establishment as a village in 1811, Florence has grown rapidly into one of America's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents by 1900 – making it one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the United States during that time period – thanks to both its location within easy commuting distance from larger metropolitan areas and its continuing growth potential due to its highly educated workforce and burgeoning business sector. Today it remains an attractive place to live, work or raise children while still maintaining a uniquecultural heritage that sets Florence apart from other major U S cities such as New York City or Los Angeles

A number of significant educational institutions are located within or near Florence: Fluvanna Community College (FCC), which is part of Clemson University; Spartanburg Technical College (STC), which offers training in various trades; and Davidson College - one of America's smaller private universities - which offers undergraduate degrees in business administration and other northwestern-inspired disciplines.
