During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many black people fled southward seeking opportunity as freed slaves were given amnesty by President Ulysses S Grant under General Sherman's order not to be taken back into slavery. Many black families moved to Florence because there was no other place they could go due to segregation laws at that time. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans returned to their former homes while others took up residence in nearby White Hall or Greenville due to lack of space or transportation options available outside of Charleston at that time. Florence is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It was founded on October 12, 1817 by John Covington and named for the Italian city Florence. The population was 348 at the 2010 census, down from 479 at the 2000 census. The area now known as Florence was once part of Cherokee County and had a population of 1,500 people in 1800 according to US Census data. The first permanent white settler in what is now Florence was John Covington who arrived on July 29, 1817 with his family from Ohio and named it after his home city of Florence, Italy where he had been born two years earlier. On November 15, 1817 James McDonald settled a farm three miles east of present-day Florence with his family also naming it after their native city of Ireland – McDonald’s Ferry landing being located near modern day Centerville on Catawba River. In March 1830 Michael Laughlin moved from Georgia to found a community called Laughlinstown about 8 miles northeast of present day Florence on Swan Creek which later became part of Lauderdale County when that county was created from parts of Person and Union counties in 1836-37 based upon new Alabama boundaries which were established following the Battle Of Pensacola (1805). In 1850 Jacksonville businessmen Jno Hatton and Wm Prentice built an log cabin just west of today's intersection of I-95/US 421/SR 570 – this site would become known as Hattonville after Jno Hatton purchased much land within its limits including what is now downtown Florence – marking one early example among many throughout the region where businesses were relocated due to changing economic conditions or because they could no longer compete with more efficient local rivals such as those located in Mobile or Birmingham. As slave society transitioned from an African American indentured servitude into free labor during antebellum America, many enslaved African Americans began moving westward seeking opportunities for political independence through purchases or arrangements made with white men who served as intermediaries for this process - these sales sometimes took place over time periods ranging up to several years resulting in long term relationships between black men and white women who bore them children while living underpaid but often happy working conditions far removed from their homesick families back East; these "black mothers" are generally considered ancestors both by themselves and their descendants today whose experiences offer unique insights into early antebellum slavery across multiple geographic regions around America - see historian Edward Moseley's extensively researched article "Black Mothers: A Historical Overview" (2002) for an extended examination thereof).
