Florence, South Carolina is a city in the Lowcountry region of the United States. The population was 50,709 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-most populous city in South Carolina and the most populous municipality in Coker County. Florence was founded on November 3, 1795, by Major General Nathanael Greene as a military post on an island in what is now Lake County. After Union troops captured Charleston, SC on April 12, 1865, Florence's status as a slaveholding Confederate capital increased significantly; many slaves were kept here until after Confederate surrender. Under Reconstruction policies enacted following Reconstruction (1868–1912), African Americans were re-enfranchised and mustered into military service to help protect white supremacy; many residents moved out of town to avoid this social discrimination. A major accomplishment of Mayor Clyde Cooksey was his plan to create a new downtown district that would include businesses open to all citizens regardless of race or color; this initiative helped revive downtown Florence as an important commercial district after years of decline during much of Reconstruction era America. A significant urban renewal project began around 1990 with aid from private investors led by then-Mayor Bob McDowell and State Senator Rick Moody: nearly two million square feet (190,000 m2) were added to downtown including two main streets—one Elm Street eastward from Meeting Street close to Interstate 95 and one Broadwalk westward from Meeting Street between West Main Street and New Market Place—making it one of southcentral Florida’s largest metropolitan areas outside Miami or Orlando proper during that period On October 6th 2009 Judge Roy Moore won election for U S Senate vacated by Jeff Sessions US Attorney General who had been appointed by President Donald Trump

Florence is a small town in the Granville County, South Carolina area. The population was 1,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Florence-Highland community and ZIP code 29514. The first settler in what is now Florence was James Robertson in 1786. He and his family were permit holders for land grants from the British Crown. In 1806, John Quincy Adams became President of the United States and renamed much of South Carolina after him including Florence which he named for himself on December 12th that year. According to one source, "Famous men who had their homes or businesses here include Andrew Jackson (the 28th president of the United States), General Robert Easley Johnston (a brigadier general during World War II) and Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison." In 1969, a fire destroyed most of downtown Florence but not before causing extensive damage to buildings such as the State Capitol building and cathedral. The replacement courthouse was completed in 1977 and opened by then-Governor Jimmy Carter with major festivities including an ice show on Christmas Eve that year. The current courthouse replaced a jail built in 1831 which closed in 1978 due to lack of funds.
In 1837, Florence was named by the U.S. Congress after the city of Florence, Italy. In 1861, it became a state of the United States and in 1937 it was renamed to honor America's first female president, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
