The area now known as Florence was part of Cherokee Nation before it was ceded to the United States in 1775. The town grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1885. By 1912, Florence had over 1,500 residents and became a city afterproclaimed by Mayor George Witherspoon on November 7th of that year. In 1932, Florence annexed the unincorporated community of Westville which had been located within its limits since 1881. Today Westville has a population of its own and is still considered part of Florence. In addition to its cultural attractions such as art galleries, opera houses, and historical sites such as Fort Sumter National Monument (home to Confederate General Robert Ewell), Florence also contains large quantities of manufacturing jobs which have helped contribute to its economic stability over the years. Some notable manufacturers include Reynolds American cigarettes (founded in 1886), John Deere products (founded in 1865), Coca-Cola Corporation (formed from two small Coca Cola bottling plants built together in 1917), andMercedes-Benz Benz (founded 1921).
Florence was founded in 1780 by the brothers James and John Florence. The town was named for their mother, the Lady Florentia Augusta of Anjou. Florence was one of the most important slave-holding towns in South Carolina. It had a large slave population because it became known as a center for the cotton trade.
