Florence is a small town in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina located on the banks of the Ashley River. The population was 5,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Florence-Newberry Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Florence goes back to 1718 when John Ashe, an Englishman, founded a trading post here known as Fort Atchison. After two years, he abandoned it and moved his headquarters to Augusta on the Santee River. In 1724, Captain James Cook landed at this site and named it Fort Caroline after Queen Caroline of England. A year later, captain William Byrd established a permanent settlement here which became known as Newberry with its own courthouse and jail. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson invaded South Carolina from Georgia and captured Charleston. When he traveled through these areas in his campaign for president that year, he stopped at Newberry on his way southward to survey the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond Mobile Bay. North of Florence was Cherokee country then under American control; but before continuing downriver he ordered Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Stevens to build a road from Rocky Mount up into this area so that traders could reach him easier from all sides without going through Cherokee Country. This road eventually became famous as “Jackson’s Trail” because it connected Savannah with Jackson’s army during their invade

During Reconstruction in South Carolina following America's Civil War (1861-1865), many white Northernsylvanian textile industry workers moved down to southern campaigns for office during Reconstruction; some became wealthy while others lost their jobs or were forced into poverty by government programs such as land grants and public works projects earmarked for African Americans. One consequence of this migration was increased competition for jobs among white men who started calling themselves "Florencese" because they were from nearby cities such as Philadelphia or Nashville where these men had worked before returning south during Reconstruction to help rebuild Southern economies after the war. African American laborers working under white employers often received lower wages than their white counterparts did due to discrimination against them at both work place and throughout society; however, through education and activism they eventually achieved parity with whites in terms of economic opportunities beginning in the late 19th century until mass integration occurred starting in 1960s nationwide United States
Florence was founded in 1795 by Captain John Floyd and his wife, Elizabeth. The town grew quickly, and by 1820 it had a population of around 100 residents. In 1827 Florence became a state capital.
