Ashley became one of South Carolina's most important plantations until it was sold to David Wilkes in 1901 and then to Harry Houdini in 1931. A post office called Ashley was established at Ashley Plantation on March 12, 1839, under provisional regulations issued by South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens during Reconstruction (). The name changed to Easley on November 15th, 1840(). The first store opened in Easley on December 5th 1850 by Wm Taggart (), also known as Old Town Shoe Store (). This store closed around 1865 due to low sales but reopened about 1870 under new ownership with Jno Haynes () as owner/operator (). On February 14th 1886 Marshall Bros., Merchants located their second store at 307 Main Street (), just south of present day First Baptist Church . This store continued operation until January 1st 1907 when it closed due to fire . Marshal Bros.' successor were Jno Menges & Sons which operated from 1911 until 1957 when they merged with Dillard’s department stores chain . On May 3rd 1958 Old Town Shoe Store reopened as Butler Shoes Incorporated following an additionition from local merchants Dillard Brothers & Co.. With this reopening came much growth for business within the confines of downtown including construction of several buildings such as First Baptist Church (1912), Second Presbyterian Church (1914), Masonic Temple (1920), and Library (. In 1951 Butler Shoes began selling shoes online). The first settler in the town was James Shields. By 1800, the town had a population of just six residents. In 1802, the United States federal government created what is now South Carolina as part of the Louisiana Purchase. As part of this deal, America acquired land east of Mississippi River that included parts of modern-day South Carolina. In 1802, John Easley purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land on which he built his residence which still stands to this day. The town's first school was built in 1802 and operated for one year before being shut down due to lack of funds. In 1805, the town voted to re-open its school with free tuition for all students under 21 years old. The school would remain open until it closed in 1870 due to lack of student enrollment and financial difficulties。 Easley began growing rapidly during the early 1800s due to its strategic location on both sides of the Savannah River - making it a valuable smuggling point for goods destined for Europe and other parts of North America.
