Easley is a town located in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The population was 17,831 at the 2000 census. Easley is home to the Easley Academy and Easley High School. It is also the location of the South Carolina Infantry Regiment (15th) which fought in the American Civil War. Easley was first settled by white people in 1814. A group of them founded a store here called "The White House" before moving on to other locations. By 1821, there were about 25 families living here and some small businesses had been established such as a blacksmith shop and tannery. In 1828, General Nathaniel Banks used this area for training purposes during his campaign against Andrew Johnson. Afterward, many civilians came to live here and started businesses such as stores and mills. In 1830, General James Ketchum recommended that Easley be named for Colonel John Tillery who had died in action during the war one year earlier. The townspeople ratified this name change in 1832 when they voted 84-5 to make it their official name. The following year saw an influx of new settlers with many coming from nearby Greenwood because of its rich coal seams. This led to more businesses being opened up including a flour mill and groceries plying their trade until around 1860 when railroad construction began cutting off transportation options for residents east of Charleston so most businesses closed down or moved away completely within 10 years; however, one business did stay open - J & G's Drug Store which still operates today thanks to its namesake proprietor John Groomsman Jr., son of late owner/operator JG Seawright Sr.. An interesting fact about this early period is that all but two members of the first school board were natives born Residents: James Henson (father), William Hutchinson (son), Hiram Nixons (brother). Thereafter education became available only through private schools until post-secondary institutions gradually emerged beginning with Clemson University in 1865 followed by Marymount College in 1875... thus becoming our present day educational system...albeit without any African Americans attending these institutions…Thereafter steady progress was made towards integration throughout our land until finally desegregation occurred fully via state legislation culminating with Brown v Board Of Education decision three years later!
