By 1850, there were 7 churches in Easley with membership totaling around 100 people. In 1861-1862, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his troops to march into downtown Easley for protection against Confederate forces waiting near Fort Sumter. When they arrived at their destination, they found that only two buildings had been left standing from when the fort had been used as a arsenal by the Confederacy before it fell to Union forces .
