Easley is a borough in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Easley was chartered on February 14, 1837, by act of the South Carolina General Assembly. The first permanent settler in what became Easley was James Capps and his family who arrived in 1799 from North Carolina. In 1827 Easley became an unincorporated community under the name "Mosesville" after Maj.-Gen. John Moses and his forces destroyed Indian encampments east of town during their campaign to remove all Native Americans from within 1 mile (1 kilometer) of Charleston Harbor. In 1830 Rev. Jesse Walker founded Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which remains one of the largest African American congregations in America today with over 3,000 members strong as of 2018. Easley is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Easley began as a small settlement on the edge of present-day Easley Township on October 3, 1823 when three families named Wilkinson and Rankin bought land from Captain John Dunlap for $2 per acre. On November 5, 1824 Wilkinson's wife died while pregnant with their first child; they name their second child Easley after her death. The post office was established in 1827 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1922. The first school in Easley was founded in 1828 by Mrs. Elizabeth Aiken and taught by her daughter Nancy Broughton. In 1830 there were four schools: one for white children and three for colored children under the direction of Miss Lucy Stephenson (later Mrs. Jno Henson). In 1840 there were six schools: two for white children and four for colored children under the direction of Rev Dr David Sims (DDS). One possible reason why only two black students were admitted to each white school during that time period may be because many African Americans did not have property or could not afford to pay tuition; however this theory has been disproven by evidence that African American students constituted up to 20% of all student enrollment at Spartanburg County public schools during this time period despite having relatively little representation among local leaders or business owners who made decisions about educational priorities within the community. In 1865–66 Chancellor Augustus Dillard moved his General Education School from Lexington, Kentucky to Spartanburg County due to overcrowding at Lexington High School where he had previously served as superintendent. After several years of development work led by trustees Wm B Riley and Geo Maycomb, who also served as county commissioners, Easley incorporated as a town on December 10th, 1870 consisting of 1 square mile (0.48 km²) of land north of its current location along U S Route 191/Old Tryon Road eastward from what is now State Highway 97 southward including any lots located east or west of US Rte 191/Old Tryon Rd., except those lying within one hundred feet (30 m)of any church or other house used for religious services which formed an original part of the town limits but are now included within Township limits
