Among these are: - In 1843, when settlers founded Easley on land donated by John Randolph Pinckney, Sr., this served as the first instance in which African Americans lived openly and freely in white America. - After being part of Cherokee County for only three years before becoming part of Charleston County (1858), African Americans formed a black majority within Charleston County's government starting in 1861 due to discrimination against them throughout much of American society at that time. - When South Carolina seceded from the United States following its Civil War and became an unincorporated county within Charleston County (1898), Easley retained its autonomy as an all-black city free from racial discrimination for over half a century until it joinedCharleston within Charleston County upon its incorporation into that county (1994). Easley has many proud traditions dating back to its early days as an agricultural center laden with slaves who produced cottonseed oil for export and processed cane sugar for local merchants. These include "The Cotton Festival" - now considered one of South Carolina's most popular tourist attractions - which draws around 100 participants each year; The Black Democratic Club - which functioned as a low-key affiliate of then newly organized segregated political parties during Reconstruction; The Negro Music Hall - established in 1924 as one means through which black artists could gain exposure outside their homes; And The Springdale Cemetery development spearheaded by Mayor James Hardee that saw construction begin on what would become one of South Carolina's most prestigious burial grounds thanks largely to contributions from many prominent citizens including First Lady Carrie Hardee Johnston MacGregor Forbes posthumously awarded this distinction;
