Easley is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Easley was founded in 1834 by John and Eleanor Easley as a log cabin community on the banks of Oconee River. The early settlers were farmers who cultivated corn and beans, raised livestock, and mined coal nearby for transportation to Columbia. The first store in Easley opened in 1853. In 1860, John Crouse became Postmaster General and began to promotemail service between Easley and Columbia through his office at the courthouse square. A railroad was built through Easley in 1865, which led to increased trade and commerce within the community. A school was established in 1867 by Mrs. James Withers; it became Spartanburg High School in 1896 when it merged with Ebenezer Baptist Church (later SC State University) to form Columbian College Preparatory School (). After Columbian College Preparatory School closed its doors in 1949 due to financial difficulties (), it reopened as Spartanburg Technical Institute (). In 1957-58, it merged with Westover Bible & Tract Society () to become First Presbyterian Church (). Finally, on December 1st, 2006–2007First Presbyterian Church sold their building back to the town for $4 million after years of deliberation (). Easley has experienced some growth throughout its history: In 1870 there were only 10 residents; by 1990 there were over 4500 residents living within a radius of . The current population stands at 9,719 as of2010 census

The town was named for Major General Edward Everett Halleck (1793-1857), who fought in the Mexican War and led an American brigade during the American Civil War. In 1865 Easley became the first African American to be elected as a delegate to South Carolina's state capital, Columbia. Easley has been called "the most segregated town in America" because it has one race - white - plurality in all property titles and zoning districts since 1960. The economy of Easley depends largely upon agriculture which accounts for over 60% of its GDP, although there are some small businesses that provide services such as plumbing and home repair. A large part of local culture revolves around nightlife venues such as The Blue Moon Lounge or JJ's Bar & Grill where live music is often played nightly
Easley was founded in 1754 by the Easley family. The settlement was located on the north side of the Ashley River in what is now Pickens County. The first settler, John Easley, arrived in 1754 and built a cabin on the current site of Easley. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson visited Easley and ordered all settlers be deported. In 1868, A.P. Hill constructed a sawmill at Easley and began to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. Other mills soon followed, contributing torowth of the town over time. By 1910, there were ten mills operating in Easley employing 2,000 people. The death of A P Hill in 1915 led to an industry-wide decline in production; however, other factors such as World War I caused a resurgence in business during later decades until finally ceasing production altogether in 1970 due to competition from new technologies and cheaper labor elsewhere. currently there are 4 small businesses that have been started up since 2000 with only 50 employees each
