CONWAY, SC – Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,676 at the 2010 census. Conway is located on the Greenville-Asheville Railroad and on the border of Greenwood and Clemson Counties. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Conway was Dr. John Atherton, who arrived in 1792 after traveling through North Carolina and Georgia. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the present day town and named it Atherton Station (later changed to Conway). In 1841, General Edmund Kirby Smith's troops burned down Atherton Station while retreating from Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. In 1860, white settlers began moving into what became Conway from surrounding counties including neighboring Greenwood and Columbia Counties which had all been admitted as slave states during that year's Ulysses S. Grant Administration. During Reconstruction years (1868-1912), many black convert to white status and name their homes "Conway" after their new white friends or family members they formed within those cultures; such conversions are typically documented by African American historians today as part of what has come to be called "Conway History." However, by 1870 most of the black residents had either left for greener pastures or were already living in nearby towns like Lexington or Greenville where labor opportunities were better available due to new development along Interstate 85 following its construction between 1985-1990 connectingasley with greenville/conway juxtaposing both rural areas with large cities creating opportunities for economic growth for these two small towns adjoining each other growing together through commerce has continued uninterrupted until this day making Conway one of America’s fastest growing municipalities over recent decades attracting more people every year than any other municipality in SC combined!
