The first people to live in what would become Conway were two men who settled there in 1820. They were John and Sally Conway. However, the town's present-day name comes from General Edward Horry who fought at Yorktown and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism that day. After General Horry's death in 1821, his widow donated land to be named after her husband and it became known as "Horry Township". In 1864, Jno. Mosely erected a toll bridge over the Ashley River which became known as "Moses Bridge". The town got its current name when General Conway ordered all Confederate soldiers caught crossing the river to be executed by firing squad without any clothing on their backs because they were not POWs and they could have been captured and sold into slavery if they had been wearing civilian clothes. In 1865, John Swayne began farming around what is now called Sweeny Bottom where he raised corn, hay, cotton etc., among other things until his death in 1881. His son James Worthy took over farmsteading until 1895 when he sold it to Julius Weems who operated it until 1909 when it passed through ownership hands several times before finally being bought by Wm. Fenton in 1926 who operated it until 1984 when it was acquired by the Town of Conway Incorporated under an agreement with neighboring towns of Rock Hill (south) and Clemson (north). The Town of Conway has since purchased additional land within Highway 320/USRoute 61 corridor which connects its boundaries with those of Rock Hill (south), Clemson (north), and Savannah (west). According to 2000 US Census figures reported by SC Division of Community Planning & Development: There are 10,812 people living within walking distance or less than 2 hours away from downtown Conway; 6% African American; 74% white; 2% Native American; 1% Asian Pacific Islander
