Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Conway is located on the East Coast of South Carolina and borders Clemson to the north and Cooper River to the south. The first permanent settler in what is now Conway was James Hogg in 1794. He named his land "Conway" after General James Conway who had fought with them during the American Revolution. The town was founded on July 4, 1836 by parents of nine children from Indianola (now part of Clemson), all of whom were born in or before that date. Father John Fenton Sr., founder of Fenton Academy (the only high school in South Carolina until 1974), erected a log cabin near present-day downtown Conway for himself and his family. A subscription drive supportively purchased him a frame house which he used as headquarters until 1840 when he moved to this location permanently. In 1841, Reverend Jnoel Broughton established Baptist Church where services are still held monthly today & also built a small schoolhouse within minutes of his church’s doors which served as both church & school until 1893 when it burned down due to an electrical fire while being used as heating oil storage buildings! Reverend Broughton again supported operations at the old building until 1907 when he sold it to Mrs Lillie Hargrave who turned it into her home & continued religious services there until 1957 when she sold it back to the Baptist Church for sanctuary purposes! Reverend Broughton donated this property also known as “Old School House” which housed three doubles classrooms upstairs along with service corridors leading off each one creating an ideal haven for male students seeking privacy from female classmates during common hours! It wasn’t long before Mrs Hargrave realized just how valuable this property actually was since several other churches wanted it too so she lettered “Old School House” their property but never resided there! So much for those false claims by some that Mrs Hargrave forced her congregation out because she didn’t like its looks!!!! Just think about that if you ever try telling THAT story any other place!!! LOLol !! Anyways, back to our story…….. After years of consideration Rev Dr Jnoel Broughton decided that instead of constructing another large building he would rather build something smaller just above ground level so people could go inside and use the teachers room/office etc… This concept became known as “Bible Hall” and Construction began on October 25th 1842 resulting in Temple Bible Chapel becoming operational on December 3rd 1843!!! After only two years operation Temple shut its doors effective January 1st 1845 due primarily to lack of donations from local citizens!!!!! Well folks because we did it…..we built our very own temple!!!!!!!! That goes without saying however because withoutCommunity support nothing would have been possible& everyone knows that without YOU THE PEOPLE OF CONWAY WE WOULDN'T EVEN BE HERE TODAY!!!!! Now wouldn't THAT be something?

The hall still stands today and is used as a tourist attraction during summertime!
