The Great Hurricane of 1900 destroyed most of Conway and killed over 100 people, including many citizens who were living within its limits at the time of the storm. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, most African Americans left South Carolina for unknown reasons; however, some continued to live in what became known as "Negro Row" along US-441 south of town west of Interstate 85 until after World War II when it migrated to areas such as Greensboro and High Point outside Columbia city limits
