Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. Conway is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Conway was James Moultrie, who moved into the area in 1799. He founded a small community named Moultrie's Creek on the site of present-day Conway. In 1801, John Johnston built a cabin on the same site and started fishing for whitebait near present-day MUSCATUCK bayou. A year later he erected a log cabin called "The Grove" on Muscatuck Point. In 1803, George Washington Moore began farming his land around modern day Conway and built a cabin there that served as his home until his death in 1810. In 1812, Duncan Campbell bought some of Moore's property and began cultivating it with rice and corn. On November 15 of that year he married Sarah Griggs at nearby Pee Dee Presbyterian Church and continued to farm the land until his death in 1825; their only child was born posthumously (Sarah Campbell died unmarried). Ida Burchfield lived next door to Duncan Campbell from 1865 to 1865 when she moved to Greenwood Village after her husband resigned from US Bank because he could not handle integrationist rulings . She brought over all of her furniture including beds and china from Duncan’s house which she stored inside her barn acrossmuscatel drive where she resided until her death in 1977 . As one of many African American women living within few miles radius during this time period Ada Burchfield played an important role in providing support for herself, her family members and others during segregation by occupying every available space
