Conway is a small town in South Carolina, located on the banks of the Ashley River. The population was 3,658 at the 2010 census. It lies within Spartanburg County, which is also its county seat. Conway was founded in 1807 by white settlers and named for General James Conway who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in Conway on December 15, 1807. It was renamed Greenville on January 6, 1838 after General John C. Greene who had helped defeat British forces at Battle of Greenville on July 12, 1837. The first school in Conway opened in February 1830 and it remained open until September 1870 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1865 Confederate general Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Gettysburg and many people died as a result including James Bledsoe (the future president of South Carolina) and his brother George Washington Bledsoe III (the future United States Senator from Georgia). In retaliation for Early's attack on Confederate forces near Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General George McClellan to march his army into south-central South Carolina to besiege Conway instead of retreating back to Pennsylvania like he had planned. However, before McClellan could arrive there were clashes with Confederate troops near Fort Sumter which led to more deaths among civilians and Union soldiers alike On January 8, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9981 which called for all male citizens over the age of 16 years old between December 25th and April 14th inclusive to be registered with military or naval service so that they could receive bounties if captured or killed during the American Civil War On January 10 1865 an act was passed by Congress entitled "An Act To provide for Negro Registration" which required all male citizens over 16 years old between December 25th and April 14th inclusive to be registered with military or naval service so that they could receive bounties if captured or killed during the American Civil War The post office name changed again from Greenville to Conway on October 2nd 1865 under postal regulation No. 5677 The first store opened in Conway as a dry goods store known as storesboro & drury on November 1st 1865 . The store continued operating until it burned down on May 26th 1888 . The first gas station operated out of a house located off High Street called “Gas House” from November 1st 1888 until March 26th 1907 when it burned down . On October 11th 1927 an electric light company started serving town residents under license number 322 CWB One interesting fact about Conway is that every day starting at 7:00am local time (GMT -5), local farmers would gather together around their large earthen ovens/pits doling out fresh corn mush while singing national anthem “God Bless America” while firing shotguns over their shoulder! This tradition continues today with country music performers playing live Sunday morning rounds throughout most of the year outside Old Mill Elementary School

Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to come to Conway was James Hargrave in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the Santee River and named it Hargrave's Campground after his father, also James Hargrave. In 1830, Daniel Boone passed through Conway on his way from Kentucky to North Carolina. He restocked his supplies at Hargrave's Campground before continuing on his journey. Hargrave's Cabin still stands today and is open for visitors to visit as are many of the other pioneer businesses that have been in Conway since its early days including Jardine & Sons Emporium (now Jardine Trading Post), The Fayetteville Weekly News and Courier (now The Daily Herald), Gadsden Coal Mines and Coke Company and The Bowman House which serve as museum attractions today. The first post office in Conway was established in 1831; it was called "New Hope." A new post office building was erected in 1922 and later renamed "Conway" after General David Greene who served as Confederate Field Marshal during the American Civil War. In 1984, an act of Congress designated Conway one of only two towns in South Carolina with a primary school system that meets state requirements for both academic programs as well as physical education/sports classes for students K-12th grade; the other such town is Hilton Head Island off Cape Town, South Africa which has had such systems since 1978 when it opened its doors to local children from withinits own community instead of sending them all over Africa via plane!
