The population of Conway increased steadily from its initial population of only 50 people in 1800 to over 3,000 by 1850, 10,000 by 1870, and 20,000 by 1900. businesses flourished due to the fertile land and abundant resources available nearby. In 1860, residents voted to move the county seat from Conway to Columbia because of concerns about growing too rapidly there. The vote failed but later that year Columbia became the new county seat.
