The days of peninsula-wide ammunition sales were behind us by 1978 when Donnie Easley reopened Circle Magazines on Greenville Avenue in Conway after moving from his previous business location two miles away at 9th & Market Streets (now home to Carlson’s). Conway is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Conway was founded by planters in 1824 as a small settlement on Hilton Head Island, about southeast of modern-day Conway. The first post office was established in 1827 and the first store opened in 1829. In 1830, a Baptist church and school were built and the town name changed to Conway after General William Conway who fought in the American Revolution. The first courthouse was erected in 1840 and it served as the seat of justice until 1898 when it became an annex to Pickens County Courthouse. In 1927, local farmers donated land for what is now Conway High School which opened its doors that year. A new courthouse was completed in 1968 and served as the official seat of government until 2002 when it became an annex to Pickens County Building Authority. In 1930, Robert Fenton constructed one of America's largest concrete piers with a length of . This pier remains operational as part of US Highway 17/SC 9 Credit Union Park todayand forms one end of SC 9's longest beachfront walkpath!. In 1953, residents voted to change their name from Hilton Head Island to Conway because they felt that this would be more accurate given that their community had grown since its founding date thirty years earlier! After many years deliberation (and much public feedback), property owner Robert Waddell agreed to change his name back to Hilton Head Island effective November 3rd 1957! This event marked not only the return of traditional sovereignty within our community but also signaled a turning point for our rapidly growing town – becoming one where progressivism ruled supreme! With such milestones accomplished during its early years including being named "the fastest growing city" by Incarceration Magazine & being selected as "the most diverse place to live" by Southern Living Magazine – we can confidently say that Conway has always been forward-thinking! Although some people may still feel like they are living behind closed doors due primarily to lack thereof access & infrastructure – we refuse To Back Down From Our Vision We Have For Our Town!

In 1817, General John Conway established a small post as a trading post on "the Alleghany" Creek near present day Conway. The post served as an important link between British North America and the interior of South Carolina during the early 1800s. A main reason that Conway became successful as a commercial center was its location close to both rivers which allowed goods to be transported quickly and easily from one side of the state to the other. Additionally, many citizens were attracted to this area due to its fertile soil and easy access to water supply; these factors helped make Conway one of Charleston's most vibrant communities during its early years. In 1836-37, when rice prices were high and cotton was cheaper than corn, some residents decided that they would rather live near rice paddies than risk being priced out of business by imports from England or Spain. This migration led to what is now known as "The Rice Rides". Each year thousands of people would travel downriver from Savannah or Augusta along "the Alleghany", picking up sacks of rice while traveling overland through central South Carolina en route to market in Charleston or Columbia City (then called Beaufort). With increased production coming out ofstates such as Georgia and Tennessee thanks to new transportation technologies like railroads and canals developments began taking hold throughout much of southcentral South Carolina including parts adjacentto present day Conway beginning with construction on the Fayetteville Road railroad line connecting Columbia City with Savannah starting around 1830-35; this opened up opportunities for entrepreneurs like Jethro Pugh (a rich planter)to build large plantations east of downtown Columbia City allowing him direct accessto markets throughoutsouthcentralSouth Carolinaities such as Moultrie (now Jasper), Summerville(now Greenville), Darlington(Now Spartanburg), and Aiken(Now Florence). By 1840 Pugh’s plantations had grown so large that he applied for permission from King George IVto establish a royal plantation - The Point Comfort Plantation limited only by his landholdings within constitutional limits - but received no response. However because many people living within constitutional limitations felt threatened by growing slave populations on their lands they successfully lobbied Congress for an act authorizing Royal Colonization which eventually happened on December 15th 1840 under auspicesof Lord Bathurst with authorization granted by Parliament two days later! Upon receiving newsof his success Jethro Pugh immediately set about building additional slaves following suit utilizing methods popular back then such as flogginglassenforced labor instead luring free black men away from their homes into poverty/slave labor where they remained until emancipation effective January 1st 1865.)
