A local militia captain, Major John Forbes, used a large rock to hurl a ball at an enemy encampment and was able to hit the target with great accuracy. In 1807, Captain James Farragut took command of the USS Constitution and decided that sailing vessels should be equipped with cannons instead of bows and arrows. To solve this problem, Captain Farragut ordered his ship's carpenter to build him a platform outfitted with two cannonballs that could be fired from either side of the vessel. This new system became known as "Farragut's Slings." The first successful launches from Constitution occurred on July 9th, 1807 when Lieutenant George Dewey hit a board off Cape Hatteras with one shot. Conway’s history can be traced back to two key moments: First, when farmers began setting out from Lexington to found a cotton mill on land that would soon become part of their community; second, when Congress passed a bill creating the South Carolina School Board in 1912 which allowed for local authorities to build schools. Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in Conway was made on December 11, 1814 when Major John Buford and his men founded a trading post on the then-impressivey high ground known as "The Hill." The original post office was called Buford's Station. Conway grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its strategic location near major transportation arteries and its rich natural resources such as coal, iron ore, and lumber. In 1835, the state legislature created Conway Township from parts of Bamberg and Newton Counties. However, many of the early settlers were unable to find work in the new township because they lacked proper education or skills. By 1860, however, most of the residents had achieved some level of success in their businesses or professions. During Reconstruction Conway became one of the most important black towns in South Carolina due to its role as an economic center for African Americans across much of Spartanburg County. In 1865, following Confederate victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House, nearly all African Americans within Confederate territory were placed into concentration camps located throughout southern Virginia and Georgia until 1865. Many individuals within Conway elected to stay behind and fight against their former masters rather than flee what could have been cataclysmic consequences for themselves and their families back home. Some brave souls even decided to form militiasized units known as "The fives" which fought side by side with white soldiers against Confederate forces during Battle For Atlanta (1864). Ultimately both sides lost but it is important to remember that not every black person living within Confederate lines surrendered; some chose to fight despite overwhelming odds while others simply ran away after being betrayed by those who swore them allegiance years ago now (a situation similar to current dual citizenships/citizenship issues facing minority groups)). After Reconstruction ended more African Americans began moving into Conway from surrounding counties including McCormick (later renamed Laurens), Avery ( later renamed Greenville), Tyrrell (later renamed Columbia), Pickens (later renamed Lancaster) and Wilkinson Counties which had all experienced rapid population growth during this time period due primarily to large cotton plantations operated by European American landowners interested in profitable slave labor(these plantations would continue operations until about 1870). These new arrivals quickly assimilated into local culture and social norms while also starting some of their own businesses soon after arriving in town beforelargely abandoning these endeavors once they realized how difficult it would be largely speaking English among a mostly white community with little appreciation or support available from either government officials or other Black entrepreneurs alike). In 1924 Conway incorporated as a city under Act No 9003A recognizing increased civic activity within town limits since it became an agricultural center characterized by extensive production of cornmeal products along with woolen fabrics popular during pre-industrial times thanks largely to local sheep farmers who maintained herds on long ranges running pastures leased from Native American tribes including several thousand Cherokee Nation members who lived adjacent to town boundaries at nearby Mount Pleasant Meadows where modern day Interstate 95 crossesriver just south of town limits). It should be noted that prior thereto there was no governing body other than individual property owners/mengerselected via lottery annually thereafterto serve as directors without pay limited only theretoby for 6 months ending September 30th each year) . Today's city has grown out various commercial enterprises spawned largely through advances made in technology such as internet marketing firms., software development companies., printing shops., food processing plants., information technology consultancies./and real estate development companies./operating throughout entire rural portions encompassing approximately 350 acres comprising approximately 20% Of City Limits
Conway was founded in 1785 by James Conway and his wife, Deborah. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Indian Trail, and in 1811 Conway became the county seat of Spartanburg County. In 1821, it became a state capital. In 1902, the United States Congress moved from Columbia to Conway because of growing population density in South Carolina.
