The rebellion failed but did cause some damage to white slavery in South Carolina and Florida. This event is also known as the Appomattox Campaign or First American Civil War (1861-1865). What followed were two decades of turmoil with little progress made towards reconciliation between black people and whites across much of America despite vehement protests from abolitionists like Wendell Phillips and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who saw this as an opportunity for racial equality through education and political power rather than through violence or retribution towards race-based offenses such as slavery . On April 12th 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Va., ending more than 620 years of human bondage within Confederate states which had resulted in over one million military deaths including more than 620 000 black men killed total
