This new lubricant was purchased by Armstrong Rubber Works and became known as "Armstrong's". In 1907, Armstrong's merged with other companies to form American Tobacco Company. Conway is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,068 at the 2000 census. Conway was founded in 1798 by General James Conway and his wife Elizabeth. It is named for General James Conway, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1960, it became an incorporated town. The first settler in what would become Conway was Colonel John Wilkinson in 1798. He built a cabin on the current site of Conway High School. Colonel Wilkinson's son-in-law, Captain Andrew Pickens, also settled here around 1810. By 1814, almost all of present-day Conway had been settled when Major William Bache arrived with the 4th Indian Infantry Regiment from North Carolina to fight at Bonnyville Bridge that year. Bache's battalion served under Major General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 and Battle of New Orleans before being mustered out on January 3, 1815 at Fort Moultrie near Savannah River where they were taken prisoner by British forces as part of the Treaty of Ghent. After their release they returned to Spartanburg County and began ranches which are still standing today including Deaconess Ranch (now known as Horry County Correctional Center) and First Presbyterian Church (now known as First Baptist Church). The first post office opened in Conway on October 11, 1800 under name "New Hope." The first storekeeper was George Aiken who operated a general store across from Nicholson's Tavern until he closed it down due to malaria on December 7th, 1800 after three months business according to official records . On November 5th 1830 Samuel McAlester opened a grocery store just south of present day Old Stage road off public square which remains open today as The Gables restaurant/bar & gift shop

Conway was founded on March 14, 1775, by George Washington and his family as Mount Vernon Plantation. In 1872, the name of the town changed to Conway after Major General Edmund Kirby-Smith, Jr., first Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina and delegate to the Confederate Congress during the Civil War. As a slaveholding state during slavery, South Carolina played an important role in African American history. The town's first black resident was Elijah Muhammad who arrived from Africa in 1838. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., one of America’s most renowned civil rights leaders, was born in Conway on April 4th, 1955. He is also known as "The Birmingham boy" because he attended segregated schools until he succeeded in desegregating them during his college years at Tuskegee University
