In 1934, an ordinance was passed which prohibited the use of gas lamps and other Light Fixtures without a special permit from Town Hall. This ordinance lasted until 1978 when it was repealed due to lack of interest from residents. Many businesses like convenience stores continued to operate with these types of lighting until the early 1990s when they switched over to digital systems

Conway is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Conway is located on U.S. Route 278, south of Clemson University and east of Greenville. The first settler in Conway was John Fitch who came in 1827. He built a cabin on the west side of US 278 near what is now the intersection of Highway 21 and Parkway Drive. A post office called Fitchville was established in 1841, but it never grew large enough to receive a mail service and closed down in 1865. In 1853, George Wigglesworth purchased land along US 278 from David Coker for $1,000. Wigglesworth built a mill on the stream that flows through Conway and became one of the most successful early entrepreneurs in Spartanburg County. In 1865, he sold his mill to James Moseley for $10,000 which allowed Moseley to create one ofsouth Carolina's largest textile companies-Moseley Mills Incorporated-which continues to thrive to this day! Although many smaller businesses were started during these early years with modest success, Wiggsworth's mills soon became world famous for their high quality cloths and towels products! In 1924, Moseley merged with two other textile companies to form JWM Textile Company (later known as Dow Chemical Co.) which still produces fabrics here today! After more than 100 years as an important part of Conway’s history – Wiggsworth’s mills are still providing jobs today for locals and visitors alike!
