Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Conway was founded by General Daniel Conway on July 10, 1814 as a log settlement called "Newburgh." In 1865, General John Brown's Raid on Spartanburg destroyed much of what remained of Newburgh and its settlers were forced to abandon their homes. A new community was established in 1867 named after General Daniel Conway and it became known as Conway. In 1876, Confederate Gen. Robert Ewell attacked Union forces at Cross Keys Creek and burned down the nearby plantation house of Colonel James Gist which had been used by Union troops as a barracks. This event led to an influx of refugees into Conway from neighboring counties including Beaufort County who were displaced during the war. The town's first school opened in 1879 and it served students until 1924 when it moved to its current location adjacent to the county courthouse which then served as the town hall until 2006 when it was replaced by a new building funded with private donations. The latter structure still stands today and is used for government meetings and other events held in the larger city of Greenville located about 25 miles away from Conway proper
