Conway is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway is home to Conway Air Force Base and the Spartanburg-Greenville Regional Airport. The first permanent settler in what is now Conway was David Wilburn in 1802. He built a cabin on Little Big Creek and named it after his father, David Wilburn Sr., who had settled near present day Clemson University. The town site was surveyed by James Wofford in 1824 and named for General John Custer during the American Civil War as part of Custer's so-called "Warpath" Expedition which aimed to capture or kill General Joseph Hooker and bring him to trial for treason against the United States. Some people say that Conway may have been renamed after General Andrew Johnson because he had been President when Conway was platted; however this theory has not been backed up by evidence. In 1865, Confederate Colonel Robert Ewell selected land around present day Conway as his headquarters during Operation Crossroads which attacked Union forces under Ulysses S Grant near Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. After being thwarted by Union forces under General Sherman, Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865 with most of his command including numerous officers and men from south central SC including those from Conway who took part in this event can still be seen today at Fort Sumter National Monument along with other Confederate artifacts located there also

The town rapidly grew and by 1820 it had a population of 350 residents. In 1832, the United States Congress designated Conway as a market town for the surrounding counties. By 1840, Conway had a population of 1,500 people and by 1860 it had reached 3,000 people. during Reconstruction Conway became an important center for cotton production and its economy declined after 1865 when white flight to neighboring cities began. Today, Conway is a small community with few businesses remaining active due to lack of resources or competition from larger cities.
