Conway is located in the Augusta County, South Carolina area and has been a community since 1838. In that year, General Nathaniel Conway founded the town of Conway on an alluvial flat land between the Savannah River and the Duck River. The first store was built in1838. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in Conway. The Confederate States of America (CSA) invaded South Carolina in 1861 and the town was plundered by Confederate soldiers. This caused some damage to the economy but it also increased population growth as people searched for food and shelter. Afterward, Conway became a strong Union town with many stores and residents volunteering their time to rebuild infrastructure such as roads and schools after the war. In 1865, General Robert Ewell Sherman's army passed through Conway on their way southward during his campaign against Confederate General Jubal Early. As a result of this event, many people left Conway for safety reasons while others moved into new homes in nearby Jacksonville or Columbia because they didn't want to be within easy range of Sherman's artillerymen. In 1969, Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Charleston causing extensive damage including significant flooding throughout much of South Carolina including Conway along with other areas around Charleston when it hit. Conway is a town in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,188 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway was founded by white settlers in 1827 and named after General John A. Conway who served as Confederate General during the American Civil War. The first post office in Conway was established in 1830. In 1851, a sawmill and grist mill were built in the town by White Bros., also known as "The fathers of Conway." In 1865, a canal was built through downtown to convey water from the Blowing Spring River to nearby plantations. The first cotton gin in South Carolina was built here by Jeremiah Bowman in 1872. The first store opened here in 1872 by Denton & Son under the name of JB’s Store #1. After years of growth and development over time, many businesses have been located here: First National Bank (1892), T&H Supermarkets (1974), Tyson’s BBQ (2006), Checkers Cafeteria (2009), and many more since then! In 1892, the first centennial of the United States, an act was passed in Congress making it a felony to import any “high-capacity” magazine that could hold more than 10 rounds. This law was repealed in 1934. In 1968, an amendment to the Constitution banned direct federal spending on firearms except for research and development purposes. The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) regulated manufacturing, distribution, and possession of firearms by private individuals without a license or registration. The NFA also created the National Firearms Enforcement Administration (NFEA) to oversee this activity. The NFA expired on September 30, 2008. On May 6th, 2017 President Donald Trump signed into law H.R. 3423 which amends the National Firearms Act of 1934 to make it easier for law enforcement officials to seize firearms from individuals who have been convicted of a crime punishable by five years or more in prison. This bill is known as the Second Amendment Restoration Act
Conway is a small town, located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 2,000 at the 2010 census. Conway is one of the oldest towns in Spartanburg County and has been populated since 1795. The first settler in Conway was George Washington who arrived there on July 24, 1795. There were two other families also living there when Washington arrived and they are still remembered today as pioneers of Conway. The family that came next had five children and all became farmers or merchants in their own right. In 1815, John Hartsfield founded Hartsfield & Company which manufactured cotton goods and exported them to Great Britain. In 1837, Jackson Gamble built the first schoolhouse in Conway while serving as superintendent of education for Spartanburg County Schools. It is now known as the John A. Garrity School building and it has served as a primary school, high school, post office and movie theater since its construction. In 1880s-1920s many businesses were established such as JB Hi-Lo Liquor store (1892), Waffle House (1910), Pillsbury Bakery (1911) and several churches including First Methodist Church (1894), Baptist Church (1900) and United Methodist Church (1920). In 1940s-1960s many factories were opened up such as American Can Corporation(1948), Union Carbide Corporation(1952)and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.(1963).After World War II many people left for better opportunities overseas so Conway lost its heyday during this time period but it has regained some popularity over recent years with development projects such as KFC restaurant ($) in 2000s-2010s; North Charleston Airport ($) between 2002-2008; CONWAY LIBRARY ($$$$$$ be constructed by Konrad Preis Architects Incorporated between 2009-2013) Conway's history can be traced back to 1795 when George Washington set foot on what is now known as Main Street in nearby Georgetown after his trip to Augusta from New York City during the Revolutionary War
