It has an elevation of 597 feet (173 meters). Conway lies within Spartanburg County, which covers an area of 31 square miles (87 square kilometers). The population density was 1,521 people per square mile (609/km²). There were 6,827 housing units at an average density of 711 per square mile (283/km²). The racial makeup of Conway was 98% white and 1% black or African American.

This was the first powered airgun and it used a metal tube with a hole in it that allowed gas to escape and create sound. It was also the first firearm using an adjustable breechblock. These guns were used by Dr. John Hargrave for target shooting in his home country of England. In 1886, Dr. John Browning designed and built the world’s first practical airgun which he called the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). This rifle was propelled by compressed nitrogen gas through a metal tube into which the user inserted a round object such as a BB or ball, fired it off at an enemy encampment some 50 yards away, and then took their report card as proof that they had successfully shot an automatic weapon! Unfortunately for Dr. Browning, this weapon never saw action due to its high cost and difficulty in production. However, this is one of history’s earliest examples of what would come to be known as “airguns”!

Conway was established in 1856 by John Conway and his brothers, Tom and Wm. Conway. The original log cabin was built on the present site of Conway High School on land patented to them by Gov. Alexander Cushing of North Carolina in 1836. In 1863, General Braxton Bragg's Confederate army passed through the community while on its way to attack Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor; as a result, many citizens left for good and the town never regained its pre-war population size. In 1886, local entrepreneur Prentiss Auld purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Conway from the state for $10 per acre ($ today). He began developing it into what is now known as "The Prentiss Estate", including a large plantation house which he named Beaufort House after Beaufort County, South Carolina's first white resident (the home still stands). The estate became one of history's most important cotton plantations with over 800 slaves working it until 1960 when it was sold to an African American family who ran it until 1981 when it reverted back to private ownership under the name "Beaufort Manor". In 1906, Ernest Burgess donated 10 acres (4 hectares) northeast of Conway to be used as a public school ground; this gift remains one of South Carolina's oldest educational institutions. In 1929–30 construction began on what would become Conways first post office—constructed at an cost of $2,500 ($ today). As Postmaster General James Keneally later wrote: "This new building will serve our people well for many years." A special election held that year resulted in Artis Webb becoming Mayoralty candidate against incumbent Leroy Easley; Webb won handily but then lost re-election two years later due to allegations that he had failed to file taxes timely. A new City Hall was built soon afterwards at an estimated cost of $60,000 ($ today). The Reconstruction period following World War II saw rapid growth within Conways borders thanks largely to job opportunities created by newly opened interstate highways; however onset of Interstate 95 caused much damage and development around town stopped abruptly in the early 1970s when access became available only from I-95Exit 9B which led directly onto Route 11A which served as both primary commercial thoroughfare and key military road connecting Myrtle Beach with nearby Columbia Junction during that time period - essentially sealing off much potential growth within town limits for decades thereafter despite continued attempts by locals to bring about urban renewal projects which have included extensive development inside city boundaries throughout recent decades albeit not without controversy or opposition from some quarters within town itself. One such project included construction beginning in 2007–2008 along portions of Routes 11A & 111A between Conway center & Highway 19 approximately 2 blocks south thereof resulting in more than 175 jobs being created – including 50 fulltime equivalents – bringing significant resurgence & revitalization efforts underway once againalbeit subjectively experiencing some setbacks recently due to weather events/potholes particular near intersection where work has been ongoing since late winter months
