In 1776 Major General James Longstreet's brigade under General Andrew Johnson invaded Yorktown Valley near present day Columbia where he stopped MajorGeneral Robert Ewell's army on July 4th while encamped two miles east of town on Goose Creek Swamp which became famous as Battle Of Camden due to Ewell's inability to get his men across the swamp unmolested despite being outnumbered three to one by Longstreet's forces. Although Longstreet lost some men and equipment at this battle his leadership secured Union victory over Confederate command at Yorktown Heights resulting in British withdrawal from southcentral Virginia effective September 11th 1864
