The town was named for General William J. Sherman and his brigade which fought in the American Civil War. The first European to visit Columbia was José de Urquiza on February 14, 1559. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto passed through the area on his way from Florida to find new routes to Asia during his 1815–1816 exploration of America south of Mexico City. In 1795, African Americans were brought to Columbia as slaves by Catfish Hunter and others operating out of what is now Edgefield County. They were given land east of the Ashley River and began cultivating rice fields that are still in use today. In 1800s white traders began trading with Native Americans including the Cherokee Nation and had access to valuable natural resources such as coal, timber, salt water fisheries, and Cherokee land near Charleston Harbor which they coveted for their plantations elsewhere in South Carolina

Columbia, South Carolina is a city in the United States. The population was 10,194 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Savannah River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Savannah, Georgia. Columbia was founded by English colonists in 1755 as Charles Towne on what is now known as the Intra- Coastal Plain of South Carolina. In 1807 it became a separate state and has since grown into one of the most populous and economically prosperous cities in America. Columbia's history dates back to early British colonial times when settlers from Northumbria arrived in what is now Columbia County, South Carolina to establish a new colony. The townee or village site for this new colony was chosen because its location would provide easy access to rice and other resources needed for the fledgling colony's development. When Charles Towne established his government here hearkened to recommendations from his friend and mentor Thomas Craven who had served as governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and then as secretary of war under George Washington. In 1759, following Indian uprisings against British rule throughout much of North America,Craven formulated a plan which called for an all-out assault against Native American tribes living along the Savannah River Valley Estuary including those inhabiting present day Columbia County. This massive military operation was code named "The Great Adventure" and led by Craven it successfully repelled several hundred Indians while inflicting heavy casualties on their leader Chief Oconee along with many other key leaders including King Powhatan himself Following The Great Adventure two years later Dutch traders arrived at Charleston Harbor with news that an expanding British empire was waiting for them on the mainland - an empire that included not just North America but also Jamaica, Newfoundland, Puerto Rico and Martinique! This news caused great excitement among early European settlers who saw this potential expansion as confirmation that their cause was right! With so many new opportunities available they began coming down off the high horse offered by their victorious battle against Indian resistance only to find themselves immediately sucked into another cycle of conquest/colonization In 1770 Governor Tryon welcomed Sir James Moore with open arms upon his arrival from London courtesy of King George III - Moore's successful attempt to purchase land east of Charleston Harbor from Lord Cornwallis during The War For Independence had finally resulted in some real change within Britain itself!! Upon proclamation by President George Washington that all land eastof Cape Fear River had been claimed by Patriots pursuant to The Declaration Of Independence these same boundaries were formally adopted creating what is today known as Columbia County! By 1800 there were over 24 thousand English colonists living in South Carolina !!!
In 1877, the town of Columbia was founded by General David Hunter and others on land that had been acquired from the Cherokee Nation. The town grew rapidly, and in 1892 it became a city. In 1961, Columbia was host to the first Olympics ever held in South Carolina.
