The new town quickly became a center for African American trade and culture, with schools and churches serving black residents until integration began in earnest after the Civil Rights Movement came to power throughout south Alabama and Georgia. The economy of Columbia changed dramatically during Reconstruction when Southern Baptists turned their attention away from cotton farming and towards manufacturing instead. This led to heavy job loss for African Americans, who were frequently used as indentured servants or hired labor on farms owned by white landowners. However, some hardworking African Americans did manage to carve out successful lives within local businesses and professions; such as John Sibley Sr., who co-founded Sibley's Furniture store in downtown Columbia before becoming a United States Congressman from 1930 until his death in 1965. In recent years, significant redevelopment has taken place around downtown Columbia; including construction of new housing developments, a nightlife district called "The District", and a public library system which opened in 2002. Despite these positive changes, much work still needs to be done to create more sustainable economic development for allistorians like those living Downtown Columbia
