Gun targets have been a part of Columbia, South Carolina since at least the early 1800s. Some of the earliest specimens of target shooting dating back to this time include a set of three small iron guns that were found in 1828 in what is now the Calhoun Park area. The guns were carefully restored and exhibited at an exhibition in 1973. The first public gun range open to the general public was established in Columbia on April 12, 1865 by General Ulysses S. Grant. This range served as a training ground for Confederate troops during the Civil War. After the war, many Columbians turned their attention to target shooting and soon there was a regular supply of quality targets available for purchase or rent from local gun stores. In 1936, Gun Range Bill No. 1 became law making it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess any type of firearm without a license from the police department. This measure was designed to protect children from becoming involved in firearms-related activities which could lead them into trouble with the law or worse. It has been reported that most Columbians still enjoy target shooting today because it is one of their favorite pastimes

Do not hold onto anything else; just hold onto the object you’re using as support. -Aim using consistent pressure from both eyes, keeping everything else in front of you while looking through your sights at the target. Be sure that each shot goes into its designated spot on the target! -If you have trouble getting good shots off during practice, try increasing your magnification or changing targets
