Columbia is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 18,865 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in South Carolina and one of the most populous cities in the Southeast United States. The area that now makes up Columbia was originally called Ayersborough by Native Americans, who named it for John Ayers, an Englishman who had traveled through that area on his way to become a trader with the Cherokee Nation. The burned down courthouse and academy were remodeled into a Greek Revival styled building known as "The Capitol" which still stands today. In 1814, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States after winning a landslide election against James Kenedy in Georgia's gubernatorial race. He selected Columbia as his official residence due to its strategic location near Savannah and its easy access to railroads for transportation across North America. When he took office, Jackson ordered Colonel Robert Elam to build him a home in town square on Broad Street – which would later be renamed Elam Place – as part of what are known as "Elam's Purchase". Columbias political power grew rapidly under Jackson and he appointed several key officials including Congressman John Cropsey and Surgeon General Druscilla Woodbury from this city. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction (1871-1877), Columbia experienced some heavy violence associated with white supremacist groups such as Ku Klux Klan members engaged in violent attacks against African Americans living within their own communities across South Carolina until finally being disbanded by governor Brownlow Glasscock effective February 1st 1877 under federal law governing civil rights operations at that time Columbia again experienced significant violence beginning on November 15th 1987 when two gunmen opened fire inside City Hall killing five people before dying themselves outside; one gunman has been identified as Christopher Speer
The city of Columbia, South Carolina was founded by English colonists in 1814. The town grew quickly and by 1829 had a population of over 10,000 people. In the 1830s, Columbia became the center of slave-owning south Carolina. The city's first white mayor was James Caldwell. After the Civil War, Columbia developed into an important transportation and commercial center in the region. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, ending the Civil War. As a result of this event, Columbia became one of the few American cities to not fall under Union control following the war. The city experienced rapid growth after Reconstruction began in 1865 until 1877 when a fire destroyed most of the business district and killed many residents including Mayor John Aiken.
