In 1886, Southerners organized a group to purchase land east of Columbia where they proposed to build a university; this effort failed when state legislators refused to appropriate funds for the project without assurances that the university would be racially segregated and that black students would not be given preferential treatment over white students. In response to this attempt at segregation, white college students rioted on October 15–16, 1886; nine people were killed and seventy-six injured as a result of violence and looting by black athletes throughout Richland County attend
