The modern lighted gun was created in 1857 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and is called the “Cannoneer”. It consisted of a long, thin tube with a small hole in the center that held a lamp or candle. The weapon could be fired by cocking the trigger back and forth, which caused an electric current to flow through the tube and around the wick, causing the flame to grow. In 1865, John Browning developed what is now known as his “Browning Automatic Rifle” (BAR), which used this same principle.
Columbia, South Carolina is the largest city in the state of South Carolina. The city was founded by James City and York County in 1808. Columbia became a U.S. capital in 1865 and has been the most populous city in South Carolina since its incorporation as a state in 1877. Columbia was founded by the British in 17mod of the new world. The town grew up around a ford on the Santee River, and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1812, Columbia was renamed Charleston after King George III's sister, Charlotte. After Charleston's fall to Union forces in 1865, Columbia became the capital of South Carolina. It remained as such until 1999 when it moved to Myrtle Beach.
