During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era America's military occupation (1868-1912), local black businessmen were key players in rebuilding Columbia into an outreach community for African Americans throughout South Carolina with businesses such as King Cotton Storage Company being some early successes story tellers about what could be done if only people would just give up racism
