During Reconstruction period there was little development occurring outside of Columbia because most people lived off subsistence farming activities which didn't have much opportunity for economic development or large scale manufacturing until after World War II when heavy industry started flowing intoSouth Carolina through its ports including Charleston (then known as Beaufort)and Savannah (then known as Hilton Head). Many African Americans born during Reconstruction periods moved intothis community due to meager jobs available elsewhere during that time frame while white residents continued using African American workers mainly on plantations despite laws prohibiting slavery at that time. When Union forces captured Richmond, Virginia on April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to march towards Durhamurst Station to take possession of that town also serving asRichmond's eastern terminus before continuing north to Petersburg. On April 12th Davie's army reached Raleigh but found no occupation there so he turned around and marched back home instead disembarking at Beaufort for unknown reasons only to find that Richmond had already surrendered two days earlier without him or any other Confederate commanders having knowledge about it! As such Davie was given both high honors (such as brevet Major General) and punishment (a court martial). Columbia residents chose not to celebrate this anniversary but instead marked it with a parade down US 1 which still takes place every year on Memorial Day weekend
