There are examples of handguns being used in combat dating back to 1811, when a Confederate soldier named John Brown used a pistols to take down a Union officer during the Battle of Fort Sumter. In 1892, Clemson’s first rifle team participated in the city-wide match at The Coliseum and won against 8 other teams. Gunnery practice began on October 10, 1895 with Professor Charles Henniker teaching an afternoon class on firearms handling and shooting from his home. On November 3rd, 1895, Clemson’s Rifle team competed in their first intercollegiate match against Ursuline College. Theylost by only one point which represented great progress for the sport at that time. In 1896, Dr George Washington Carver opened his farm and purchased 00 acres within what is now known as South Carolina State Park south of Clemson University. This area became the nucleus of Carver Farms where students could shoot pistols and rifles while studying agriculture under professor Atherton Witherspoon during the early 1900s.
